Medicinal: A popular topical remedy for bug bites, stings, cuts, and bruises, the leaves can be chewed and applied immediately or incorporated into a healing salve. Plantain also has astringent properties and can be useful for diarrhea and hemorrhoids, while it's demulcent properties help relieve inflamed mucous membranes and can be useful in coughs. The seeds of plantain, known as psillium, can be stirred into water and eaten for a gentle laxative effect.
Growing instructions: Perennial in zones 5-9. Stratify for one week at 37°F. Germinates at 70°F in 7-14 days. Germination is light dependent. Transplant or direct sow in early spring. Full sun. Grows 12" tall. Space 12" apart.
