Indigo, Blue False
A smooth, ornamental perennial with upright growth habit and clover-like leaflets. Tolerates heat and drought. Plants may take two years to flower, but the flowers are worth the wait. The deep indigo blue flowers are borne in upright showy racemes. (Baptisia australis)
Medicinal: Members of this genus have been used traditionally as immune stimulants and are currently under investigation. Caution: B. australis is sometimes confused with B. tinctoria (Wild Indigo) which is known medicinally, but rare in cultivation. Baptisia species have a narrow dosage tolerance. All are potentially toxic causing severe diarrhea, anorexia, and vomiting. Recommended for ornamental use only.
Growing instructions: Perennial in zones 3-8. For best germination, scarify seed or lightly puncture with a thumb tack. Germination at 70°F. Transplant or direct sow in spring or summer. Full sun. Grows 30"-60" tall. Space 24" apart.
