Also known as Vitex. Lovely ornamental shrub with aromatic palmate leaves. From June through August it produces lilac-blue flowers in showy pyramidal spikes. The twigs can be used to make baskets. (Vitex agnus-chastus)

Medicinal: The dark maroon, pungent fruits ("berries") are harvested, dried, and tinctured in October and November. Traditionally used as an emmenagogue. It appears to stimulate and normalize pituitary secretions and thereby normalize the estrogen-to-progesterone balance. Used also to stimulate lactation.

Growing instructions: Perennial in zones 5-10. Stratify seed for 45 to 90 days. Germinates in 7 to 21 days. Transplant or direct sow in spring. Space 6' to 12' apart. Grows 3' to 12' tall.
