Coreopsis: Tall Plains

  • $3.00

This cheerful and bright meadow wildflower makes a wonderful addition to a rock garden or wildflower planting. The vivid flowers have eight gold-yellow rays surrounding burgundy centers of variable size. The young plants have somewhat slender, weedy-looking leaves, but in eight weeks the plants blaze into bloom bearing hundreds of flowers lasting into the fall. Traditionally used as a dye plant, the flowers are harvested at full bloom, then dried and simmered to make a dye bath. In acid solution the flowers produce a yellow dye, and in alkaline solution they produce a red dye. Two dozen plants provides enough flowers to dye a pound of wool. (Coreopsis tinctoria)
